Instruction will focus on the fundamentals of hitting and fielding. “We’re going to try it on a trial basis,” said county parks director George Page. “Our goal is to have 50 kids come out I feel the more visible our kids become the better it will be for them and their futures,” FOLLOW THROUGH A conversation with... Shannon Huffstetler Shannon Huffstetler, a 1999 graduate of East Gaston High at Mt. Holly, is a freshman on the Brunswick Community College basketball team. Huffstetler ran cross country in high school and played center on the basketball team. With the Dolphins, the 6’6”, 215 pounder, plays forward and is enjoying his first year in college, adjusting to life both on the court and in the classroom. Huffstetler talks about his decision to attend BCC and what he sees in the future. ■ Why did you choose to attend Brunswick Community College? ' “I got in touch with Coach (Gene Doane). He called my house and told me that he knew I was looking at some other teams. He said if things didn’t work out with the other schools to give him a call because he would be willing to have me. Things at other schools didn’t work out, so I gave him a call. That’s pretty much how I got here.” ■Are you glad to be here? “Oh, yes. At first, I wasn’t too sure if I even wanted to play basketball any more. After the season got started, everythipg just changed. I was a whole lot happier. I like it here.” ■ What were you going to do if you didn’t play basketball? “I probably would have ended up going to a school to just concentrate on academics, maybe go to a school closer to home.” ■ What was your high school career like at East Gaston? “It went pretty good. My sophomore year I got to play with Stuart Hare, who is now at UNC Wilmington. I was MVP for my junior year and my senior year. I scored over 1,000 points. I was like the fifth person in the school’s his tory to ever do that That was pretty cool: Our teams weren’t that strong, but we had a lot of fun playing.” ■ Is the level of competition now any different than what you were used to? “It’s tougher. In high school, we had a tough conference also. It’s a lot tougher, I’d say, now. It’s a whole lot more fun because we’re doing more winning that I was in high school. That’s always fun.” ■ How did the transition go for you, in having to change positions from center to forward? "I moved out to the wings a little bit That’s a whole lot different I’m still learning some of the things that go along with that position change, but I enjoy it more. Playing outside, I get more touches with the ball. Plus, I get to create a little more. In high school, I was playing cento- all of the time. I liked it, but I’m enjoying this, too. It’s a good change.” ■ Sounds like you are reaOy glad to still be playing basketball then? “Oh, yes. When we started playing our games, we were playing really well. I think that’s one of the things that helped me. I was like tired of playing because we were not winning. I was wanting to win, and it was getting hec tic really. Now that I’m here, we really have a good shot at being a successful team. That’s really what I wanted to do.” ■ How did you get involved in this sport? Was there someone who influ enced you along the way? “When I was younger, I played in the recreation league. All of my friends were doing it, so I just started playing. Basketball, I enjoyed it, but I played other sports, too. When I started play ing basketball I didn’t really know that it’s what I was going to do. When I got to the seventh grade, I was pretty good but I wasn’t all that great When I made the team in the seventh grade that real ly helped me out a lot If I hadn’t made it in the seventh grade, I don’t know how I would have ended up, if I would have said, ‘Forget it all,’ or if I had tried again.” ■ What other sports did you play at East Gaston? “My sophomore year I ran cross country and track. In my junior year, I just played basketball. In my senior year, I played basketball and ran track. I did the high jump in track. That was pretty cool.” ■ What becomes your goals now? “After this year or next year, I’d like to go to a four-year school and finish up. I want to get a degree in business management or administration. That’s really what I want to do right now.” ■ Do you want basketball to help carry you to a four-year school? “I’m hoping to. After this year, or next year, I’m hoping to be picked up by someone and then continue play ing.” ■ What are your thoughts on play ing in the Dean Dome? “That’s really exciting. I’ve been in there one time, but I never walked down on the court of anything. That’s pretty exciting. I look forward to that a lot Kris Lang, who plays at UNC, I played against him a couple of times. He’s pretty cool. I look forward to going and watching them and playing there. It’s pretty exciting.” ■ With the Dolphins team, how do you fit in with this particular team? Do you feel you have a good team here? “We all know our roles. Everybody has a role. We just try to play it as best we can. I think everybody fits in good with each other. I like playing with everybody on this team. Everybody has a role on this team, a job to do, and we pretty much get it done. We struggle some times, but everybody’s going to straggle. I’d say overall, we have good chemistry right now.” ■Are college classes what you had expected? “Our classes are really good. I enjoy them a lot One of the filings I like a lot is that they are smaller. At a four-year school they would be a whole lot larg- .*. er. Most of my teachers are from the universities anyway. I feel that in the classroom, I’m learning a whole lot, too. I enjoy them. Our classes are pret ty cool.” A brief look at area sports events, standings pJWaccamaw 2A Boys Basketball Team Whiteville East Bladen East Columbus West Brunswick Fairmont South Brunswick West Columbus South Columbus St. Pauls Conf.
